Is Your Business Ready for MTD 2026
As we enter 2026, the deadline for Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is no longer a distant date—it is officially around the corner. On 6 April 2026, the biggest change to the UK tax system in a generation begins.
If you are a sole trader or a landlord, you may be wondering: "Is my business actually ready, or am I headed for HMRC penalties?"
At TaxVAT Return Accountants, we’ve helped hundreds of businesses in Birmingham, Wimbledon, and Bury St Edmunds make the switch. Here is the definitive checklist to ensure you are compliant.
1. Do You Meet the £50,000 Threshold?
The first wave of MTD (April 2026) applies to individuals with a gross qualifying income of over £50,000.
-
The "Turnover Trap": This is based on your income, not your profit. If you bill £55,000 but your expenses are £40,000, you are still required to join MTD because your gross income exceeds £50k.
-
Combined Income: If you earn £30k from a consultancy business and £25k from rental property, your total is £55k. You are in scope for 2026.
2. Is Your Software "HMRC-Compatible"?
Manual records and standard spreadsheets are no longer enough. Under MTD rules, you must use software that can link directly to HMRC’s API.
-
The Solution: As Xero Platinum Partners, we recommend cloud-based systems. They automate your digital links, meaning you don't have to worry about manual data entry errors that could trigger an HMRC audit.
-
Avoid the "Bridging" Risk: While some "bridging software" exists for spreadsheets, it is often clunky and prone to breaking. A native cloud solution is much safer for 2026 compliance.
3. Are You Ready for Quarterly Reporting?
The most significant change is the frequency of reporting. You will move from one annual return to five digital submissions per year:
-
Quarter 1 (April–July): Due 7 August
-
Quarter 2 (July–Oct): Due 7 November
-
Quarter 3 (Oct–Jan): Due 7 February
-
Quarter 4 (Jan–April): Due 7 May
-
The Final Declaration: Due 31 January (to finalize reliefs and other income)
4. Have You Claimed Your Digital Identity?
To sign up for MTD, you need a Government Gateway ID and must have submitted at least one tax return in the last two years. Many business owners lose their login details—check yours today to avoid a last-minute scramble in April.
